we are about to see creative destruction on steroids

Lately, I've been feeling pretty uninspired. The quarter has officially ended; I got my grades. The workload of senior year is unbelievable and at this point I am feeling so incredibly apathetic towards all the traditional, normal things that go along with senior year. Senior portraits? skipped on that. Graduation cap/gown I was supposed to buy today? didn't go and went out to eat instead. Prom? who cares. I want to fast forward life because I could care less about the stuff your supposed to do, events your supposed to go to during senior year.
Today's get-up,

white vneck Hanes tshirt, grey hoodie, fringe scarf,
black Tara Jarmon rosette bubble skirt (worn as a top),
lightwashed Levis rigid denim "mom" jeans,
Sockdreams knee-high wool socks, and gold leather Converse

Oh and happy Halloween, I'm passing out candy to trick-or-treaters tonight! Forget dressing up, I have way too much work to even think about that.

cold weather dressing and photos in excess?

Today was the first day that I had to wake up to 30 degree (0 degree Celsius) weather. It was especially hard getting out of bed because it was frigid in my room and my blankets were nice and warm. Anyway, got up, got dressed, and felt incredibly sleepy throughout the whole day. Maybe cold weather makes people tired and drowsy...who knows.

Express marled wool yarn men's sweater, horn necklace,
Gap black Tshirt dress, Vera Wang black tights, distressed navy Converse
(with a bunch of fake grapes on the right shoe),
and Jones New York raincoat/trench thing
I'd say the get-up was sufficient for 60-some degree weather, which was about what it was today. I'm mildly excited for cold weather. It means that I can buy scarves and a nice pair of leather gloves....eeeee the list could continue on, but I'll stop for now; homework calls.

one day in the life of ivan denisovich somethingpicasso

I had the day off today because it's the end of first quarter and teachers need the day to get the grades together for students. So, today I decided to document what I did up until now...
9:30AM wake up! Normally on a school day I wake up at 5:30AM so getting that extra four hours was bomb. I get dressed, brush my teeth, braid the mop because it was a mess...

No worries, I didn't walk around barefoot.
Add black socks and gold leather Converse to this.

10:00AM is a brunch-ish meal, my own take on grilled cheese (french bread, American cheese, egg, green peppers), an apple, and OJ

500+ calories later...
11:00-12:00AM do some homework, surf the web, watch 7th episode of Romantic Princess
12:00-1:30PM go to local grocer to buy shit for making cupcakes; had quite the time looking for the food coloring...the people working there were good-looking but incompetent! Oh and also food again, this time at a sub place. As I'm typing this, I'm realizing that I ate two sandwiches today, wow.

another sandwich?
1:30-2:30PM at the dentist. And while in the waiting room, I flip through the October 2007 issue of Forbes which is basically an encyclopedia of the top 400 richest people in the United States. "Charles Butt & family" caught my eye, wouldn't mind the name for their billions.

2:30-3:30PM walk over to the newly renovated library which I hadn't been too since it opened nine weeks ago. It's nice, I checked out a book on cosmetic surgery and Colombia.
4:00-6:00PM friend comes over, we work on our Colombia presentation and she helps me frost the cupcakes (that my brother made because sometimes he's cute and helps out like that) in the colors of the Colombian flag.

bribery, attention-getting device for the class
6:00-7:00Pm cupcakes and kiwi for dinner!

Ok and now I'm updating this thing, and surfing the web, and doing homework. It'd be fun to see some other people do a "one day in the life of ______" post, my days are rather boring...

music produces a kind of pleasure which human nature cannot do without

Hip hip hooray! I'm getting an iPod. My brother's had the 'classic' video iPod ever since it came out about two years ago, I believe? His was only 30 gigs and it was $300 at the time, and now I can get one for 80 gigs for $250.I guess this just goes to show that waiting a while for an update pays off. So what made me decide to finally jump on the boat and join the rest of the iPod-purchasers? Well, in planning ahead, I will need something to do on a 12-hour flight to China and in planning even further ahead, college life seems to need background music.

Paying $100 more for the iPod with 160 gigs isn’t a bad price to pay for twice as much memory, but it’s not practical. In the end, I can only listen to/watch one song/movie at a time (which is why I’m considering the Nano as well: small, cute, black!) For color on the other hand, there’s no two ways about it, when it comes to the black or white version, I’m definitely getting the black. From here on out, any electronic device I get will have to be black , it will be my own requirement. I regret getting the bubblegum pink Motorola Razr phone, but at least its contract is almost up and I will be due for an upgrade in a few months. Black is just so much sleeker and classic, I guess silver and gold are okay too, I’m up for those.

whenever you feel like criticising anyone, just remember that all the people in this world haven't had the advantages that you've had

the quote? Nick Carraway, F. Scott Fitzgerald's character in the Great Gatsby. Fitzgerald has become one my favorite authors, I enjoy the way he writes alot alot alot.

Today, its raining, for lack of better expression,
cats and dogs. If you didn't know already, the southeast United States was and probably still is in a major drought. I hope the rain replenishes much-needed water supply, but honestly... did Mr. Higher Being have to let it rain right before school let out? I was, literally, forced to stomp through small rivers of water while trekking out to the bus. It was just bad luck that I didn't decide to wear a hoodie (which I do typically, but decided to wear an oversized sweater today instead) so I had no shelter from the rain, but what's more was that when I actually got to the bus, any form of "shelter" would really have been useless because I was drenched from head-to-toe. At least I wasn't silly enough to wear flats today and opted for Converse, but still, enduring an hour-long bus ride with the air conditioning blasting and nodding off to sleep in the middle of it really was not a pleasant experience. Oh and also, I witnessed a car accident today that resulted from a bus driver spontaneously stopping in the middle of the road to drop off a kid. It looked so odd when the car rear-ended the other car. I think I expected something more, a huge crashing sound maybe? I didn't even hear a sound the car just kind of bounced backward a bit, it looked funny...like bumper cars.
And even as I type this blog, it is still raining outside, pouring. My backyard has transformed into a river, no joke. Rain seems almost foreign to me since I haven't seen it rain like this in so long.

Anyway, I got home and got a package in the mail from Teen Vogue, they sent me a little sample of Guerlaine's new perfume, it smells nice. It was a nice little upper...

Two posts in a day is probably excessive, but I have almost no homework today and I plan on watching Gossip Girl tonight which is incredibly frivolous of me, but if its any consolation... this is only my second time watching it!

the Sartorialist takes on Beijing and HK!

I'm sure a ton of you fashionistas know of the Sartorialist, a site that captures the personal style of people in New York and fashion events all over the world. His work has been in international Vogue (Korea, British, Paris...) and he's a fixture on the street style section of style.com. Well imagine my excitement when I read on his blog, which just so happens to be on blogspot, that he's going to China. I'm really eager to see his photographs from Beijing; I haven't been back to China for almost four years and back then I hadn't developed the interest in fashfash that I have now. So it'll be exciting to see a glimpse of what people are wearing now. It seems like the Sartorialist also is aware of the fact that blogspot has recently been banned/censored from the Chinese interweb and says that he'll email pictures in order to update his blog. Not a bad idea, actually. I could email photos to myself instead of trying to upload them to online image hosting services while I'm in China this summer.

Fendi at GWC, I'm blogging about it again, I know.

I know what I said the first time seeing the pictures was "disappointment", but after seeing more photos on style.com and reading about what went into it (apparently the price tag for the event totals about $10 million!), I must say that the clothes have actually become more appealing to me. A portion of them have Eastern, oriental influences while others were straight from Fendi's SS08 collection in Milan show. I love the makeup too, bright poppy red lips and cheeks, very fresh and complements the clothes.

Oh and lookie, Karl used Emma Pei! She was the main in the Teen Vogue photo shoot in Beijing a few months ago that I blogged about. I really really like how the show closed with Du Juan and that clutch with the massive tassels is beyond (do I hear a DIY from Linda? possibly...)

Ok this is the last time I'm going to talk about the fashfash show at GWC because I'm sure it's annoying to hear me gush about it so much; but you have to admit, it truly is amazing.

need a good laugh? listen to Linda sing

This is one of my favorite songs right now, 童话(Tong Hua) or Fairytale by Guang Liang. The music video (real one, duh) is pretty sad. If you're not Chinese-speaking savvy, well neither am I really, but you can read the lyrics and English translation here. I sing the chorus/bridge, not the whole thing...that would kill me, and probably you too.
Linda sings

Guang Liang sings

This was completely spur of the moment and I might have pronounced some words wrong. I haven't undergone any training, this was recorded for fun (I sing all the time at home
just like this so you can imagine how irritating I can be, just be glad you don't live with me; this is just documenting my natural state: Blingo lyrics, click click, sing!) so anyone that's itching to bash me and tell me to "give up my dreams of becoming a singer" can just shove it because I have never had a dream like that. Ok, lie! But I don't plan on doing anything musical with my career. Anyway, do I have an English accent when I speak Chinese? My parents tell me it shows sometimes; I hope not, that's embarassing.

my first set of wheels

I've been "of driving age" for a little over 1.5 years now, but I still haven't taken the driver's license test. I think I have gotten an ample amount of practice with my learner's permit though. It's pretty hard even for me to believe that I've been riding public transportation to school for 12 years of my life. So this winter-ish I'm planning to get my license and my parents plan on getting me a car; one that my brother will inherit after I'm off to college. These are the options the fam's been considering. I'm only part of the decision process because I'll only be driving it for half a year.

Volkswagen Jetta

Volvo S40

Honda Fit

Toyota Yaris

Scion tC
My parents really want to get the Volvo S40 because it does well in accidents, but I really like the Honda and Toyota. My friend has the Scion tC and I must say, it's pretty awesome as well. The speaker system is incredible because apparently, it has this subwoofer built-in that comes standard. And the seats! They are really sporty looking and cool and the backseat is suprisingly roomy for a two-door sports car. VW Jetta is also in the game, but I'm really not too keen on the shape of the car, especially the snout (nose? whaaaaat!) of the car it's kind of flat at the very tip which bothers me, alot. I have the same issue with the Volvo. We will see how the negotiating, discussing, and processing goes for my first set of wheels, I'll keep you posted.

hit me with music

God, I just listened to Emmy Rossum's new single Slow Me Down. I love it. I didn't even know she sang so incredibly well. I should watch Phantom of the Opera... The song reminds me a little bit of Imogen Heap with all the synthesizing and harmonizing and I don't know what I'm talking about...

I haven't really bought a CD in ages (I think the last one was the Britney Spears? the one with I'm A Slave 4 U on it), and this might just move me to buy one. Apparently, the release date is October 23rd, and knowing me, I'll probably get it a month after that because I'm never one to be quick with things.

remember when I said Karl would be showing at GWC?

GWC = GREAT WALL OF CHINA
Remember when I mentioned in an earlier post about how Lagerfeld was showing his Fendi collection at Great Wall of China? Well here are the first pictures that I found surfacing on the interweb. It's pretty spectacular if you ask me. It's the Great Wall of China, I don't think anything fashion-related has ever happened on the ancient wall that's been around since the Qin Dynasty.

Zhang Ziyi and Kate Bosworth were apparently, the only camera-worthy celebrities that attended the show
I know all the talk that's been going around about how great the show is...sure, the location is incredible, but the actual clothes are questionable. Maybe seeing more pictures will convince me, but I really don't see anything innovative or exciting about the collection he showed. I like the models he used, and everything about the runway setup, but I really have no words for the clothes. Of course, there are a few pieces here and there that are attractive to me I think the clutches were rather interesting and these two looks were nice, but overall it was a pretty big disappointment clothes-wise.

this is hilarious

Whilst browsing urbn.com,I came across this tshirt dress with a "naughty nurse" graphic printed on it. At first glance I thought they were selling a nurse costume in the spirit of Halloween, but I quickly realized I was wrong. Personally, I think the idea is somewhat genius. I love shirts that have prints on them that look like something else. I've seen tshirts printed with tuxedos, ties, a Lacoste polo (which I'm still looking for, has anyone seen it? it's actually made by Lacoste; the one I saw was a red tshirt with white outlined polo design and the classic green croc), and this baby carrier one which is just as funny, if not more than the nurse one.

the power of the simple tshirt

Ever since senior year started, I have become increasingly lazy with what I wear. Take this week for example, I've worn the same white Hanes vneck tshirt three days in a row. It's so easy to just throw it on and go and I've gotten away with it, or no one's said, "hey isn't that the same thing you wore yesterday?" not to my face at least. I think everyone is too wrapped up in their own business to notice or even care. That's good news for me because ever since I bought this six-pack of white Hanes vnecks, I haven't been able to stop myself from wearing one at least once a week. I sometimes sleep in them and then wake up and go to school. I think I have discovered the power of the simple tshirt.

Donning the Hanes vnecks that I almost live in.
And what's more, there is a HUGE market out there for tshirts. Threadless, a site that I've been browsing since 10th grade, makes tshirts with designs/art on them by submission from random, everyday people. Actually, I quite like this one they emailed me about, I need it. (but what's with the two dollar price difference for girls shirts? gender equity just had a minor injury...) Then there's stores like American Apparel which specializes in all things tshirt and has them in just about every color you can think of, plus they have a bazillion other things that I would like in my closet right now, so they are like my majorlove. Then there's all the higher end labels like C&C, James Perse (hi, $70 basic plain white tshirt I don't think I need you), Michael Stars, etc.

Yep, so the moral of this post? Buy plain tshirts so you don't have to think about what you're wearing when you have had 2 hours of sleep the night before.

I cast shadow puppets on my wall

Chance happening, I did it when I have a ton of other things I should have been doing. I might use one of them for a physics photography contest which just so happens to be extra credit for my AP physics class!

the quest for the coat is "mission accomplished"

Approximately two months ago, that is before I started this Blogger blog, I made a post on my old Xanga in search of the perfect cold weather coat. I posted a nice range of options ($100< price of coat <$200) and decided not to jump into buying one, but instead, wait it out until more options were available. This weekend, when I decided to tag along with my mom and brother on a trip to the mall to find my brother's winter wear, a relatively easy task seeing as how all he requires are two Columbia fleece jackets, I also ventured out to see what was on the market for myself. I tried on three or four from the selection at Gap and finally settled on a choice that my mom picked out for me. Does that mean that mom always knows best when it comes to fashfash? Definitely not, there has been one too many times when her taste couldn't be farther from my own, but she is a Gap fanatic and seeing as how that was the only store that offered any smart winter wear in the stupid little mall, I went with it.

The coat is tweed, as the description says, and is made in China which the site description conveniently sums up as "imported" which makes me wonder just how much profit Gap is making off an item that retails for $150. Anyway, the coat is nice. It's really the details of something that move it from nice-to-look-at-on-the-rack level to actually spending money and buying it for me; dthis coat has details that are attractive to me. The inside is lined with black satin and the sleeves with striped white and the buttons are big, which is always a bonus in my book. So the quest for the winter coat has been successful.
I still kind of want another one though, a shorter, hip-length one. The marigold Delias one is now on sale for $70 which is enticing because of it's neat color and the fact that it's about $20 cheaper than before. Hmm, we'll see, we'll see.

where'd all the good people go?

Honestly Jack Johnson, I don't know, were there ever any?

Today, while at my usual haunt, the library, I brought up a retired couple my family knows whose goal is to travel 100 countries. A response from a friend was, "why don't they give their money to poor people instead of doing something silly, frivolous like that" she said something along those lines... I don't know, because they don't want to?
Which gets us to the bigger question, does anyone truly do anything completely "good," no strings attached, no self benefit except satisfaction anymore? Did they ever? It annoys me that people hope and expect others to do things just from pure goodness of heart. We are put on this Earth to make ourselves happy and that is all. If that happiness can be achieved by giving to charity then so be it, but I hate the pressure that we place on people to give back. It is so incredibly hypocritical of us to tell others to give what they have away for free. I am not incredibly greedy, my family often gives to charity organizations, and about a month ago I gave away about $500 worth of gently used clothes; I am human and I can do it on my own accord.

to be or not to be, that is the question

So the title is cliche, I must say, but I've finally read the work that the quote comes from and if I ever look back on this I hope that I'll remember, "hey this was the time I read Hamlet!"

I finalized all the colleges I'm applying to and just added University of Chicago to the list yesterday. Which means I will need to find two more somebodies that will write reasonably good recommendations for me. The college admissions process has consumed me, but with good reason, it
is the rest of our lives we're talking about here. Or so the parents have said... I'll do it first and see if I believe them later.

In other news, I want to have a small get-together at my house. I've never actually had a house party except the odd one that my parents throw, but that hardly even counts, and what's more is that the last one was probably three, four years ago. Basically, I want people my age, and fun kiddie stuff to do because I need a break from becoming a "grown-up." Halloween might be a good excuse, we'll see if my talk turns into action, because it often never does. I'm not sure if that last sentence was proper use of English, but then again, I don't care because I like to think that I am some kind of Shakespeare-ish genius writer who can use language as she likes and expect the world to understand. Weird? No really, the irony of it all is that the word "weird" was, apparently, made up by William.

God I ramble.

the schoolbag that holds your life inside

Ok, so not necessarily my life, but it does carry a large fraction what I use to organize myself! I am on the search for a new schoolbag. Currently I use a Jansport backpack that I've had since 10th grade and it's getting kind of ratty and tired. I can usually carry a binder in my hand and stow away books, calculator, pens/pencils, wallet, cosmetic case in the bag. I'm planning on one I can use for the last half of this year and into college so it needs to last me a while. And I'll still probably buy a regular Jansport/Eastpak backpack. Here's some of the bags I'm looking at or I just think are plain cool as handbags.

Marc by MJ patent utility tote in Blonde. There's also black, but I think this would transition better and I'm not really ready for a full-on dark, heavy handbag yet. I'd probably ask for this as a Christmas-ish, finished-all-your-college-apps present, if its still around at the time.

Raw Bags newspaper tote. Not practical but I am all for recycling and this is awesome!

Foley + Corinna City tote. I am in absolute love with this bag; have been for a while actually. I'm not sure if it'd hold up since the shape is so unstructured.

Longchamp "Le Pliage" tote in Dusty Plum. I think this is really basic, maybe a more interesting color?

UO Deux Lux perforated foldover bag. I really like this. Not only because it is the cheapest of the bunch, but it combines elements of all the things I want in a bag. The foldover top, a tad bit slouchy, but the buckles and other details give it structure, and its shiney and perf and big, perfect. I'll probably get this, the Marc will have to wait.

Any suggestions would be pretty awesome.

judge others by their questions rather than their answers

Does anyone feel like Chinese people in America are a lot more timid than other minorities? Is that the vibe that Chinese people give off, shy and timid?

If something like the Jena 6 occurred would Chinese people be able to band together and create a movement against it? I always get the feeling that, to a Chinese person, speaking out against something (being proactive) taints their ethnicity and puts it in a bad light or that they'll be marked as the ethnicity that does ________. So in the end, they would be more likely to stand silently by or
or hope that the thing will just resolve itself or watch an injustice occur than push for change . I can't say I haven't experienced it myself, thinking, "oh I can't say that otherwise they'll generalize all Chinese people as blah blah blah." Anyone ever have the same thoughts, thought about the same thing?

It's been a long day, I've had two hours of sleep.

the truth which has made us free will in the end make us glad also

So this weekend was unlike any other typical weekend in Lindaland because I spent 5.5 hours of my life taking a standardized test that essentially, determines my life. Time well spent? Probably. Afterwards, I went to go check out Vera Wang's line for Kohls, Simply Vera. I really really like it; all kind of somber, neutral colors with the exception of that bright canary yellow, pretty ruffle details, and tasteful use of rhinestones. However, I was misinformed by the Oprah show, who said this and this and this were 100% silk from the collection, but when I looked at the tag it said 100% polyester. Nice going, Oprah people. Anyway, so I was browsing the collection and I came across this display of leggings, tights, and socks. If you didn't know already, I have a weakness for buying interesting legwear. They were from the collection! There were about 4 or 5 different fabrics and three different styles: trouser sock, leggings, tights (you do the permutation for how many different varieties). I finally settled on a pair of charcoal grey heathered tights and black "metallic" leggings which aren't really metallic, but more like spandex material. Hi, and let me tell you, the quality is amazing...really thick (read: but breathable), stretchy material that's incredibly comfy. I plan on getting more, and I have my eye on this dress from the collection as well. At $16 a pop they are pretty awesome.

So after the Simply Vera viewing, I waltzed over to BJs, which is this super warehouse where you can buy stuff in bulk, and picked up a copy of the Harry Potter (and the Deathly Hallows) book. Y
es, that one, the seventh, the final installment of the series that I have been reading religiously since the 4th grade! I'm really slow on the uptake if you didn't know already and I think I already got the gist of what happens, but that doesn't really spoil anything for me. After BJs we went to the Asian market and I bought Asian candy and my parents loaded up on groceries and we went home and ate our groceries. And today I woke up relatively early for a Sunday morning and tried to do college stuff and homework, but instead I've come here and updated this thing.

the issue of the double eyelid

I don't think anyone in the world understands the concept (importance, maybe.) of the double eyelid as much as Chinese people do. Do you have it, not have it? danyanpi, shuangyanpi? It is such a huge determining factor of aesthetics. My parents have annoyed me about it ever since I can remember, saying in Chinese, "why aren't they more noticeable? they can only be considered half double eyelid because they aren't very defined..." The idea of them becomes borderline ridiculous when one thinks about it. I'm not trying to say beauty comes from within, because honestly, it doesn't. Psychologically, appearance determines a lot. People who are beautiful get better feedback than people who are ugly. Anyway, I digress a bit.
So I think I can say with almost 100% confidence that every Chinese person knows the meaning and implications of having a double eyelid. It means that you are instantly put into another category of Chinese people, whether that category is of higher standing than the not double eyelid group is debatable, but nonetheless, doublers are in a whole different group. Okay, so living with my "half double eyelid" has gotten me a lot of shit from my parents as well as my extended family. But there is good news, I have mastered the method of achieving the full blown double eyelid. It doesn't require any cosmetics or stickers (which I find absolutely hilarious; if you don't know what I'm talking about please Blingo it). All I have to do is have a really good cry the night before, it must have a duration of at least five minutes and I need to make sure that both of my eyes are tear-ing at the same rate, otherwise I run the risk of having unsymmetrical eyelids! All I need now is to have reason to bawl for a good five minutes before I sleep and I will have instant double eyelids that last the whole day when I wake up! The result? See for yourself.

If you didn't clue in already, I am being slightly satirical about this. I did cry the night before for those eyelids, but not for the sake of having them. I documented them on the occasion because it is a rarity. An eyelid determining the beauty of a person seem preposterous to me. And look, I have them and I can only be considered average. I hate the idea of them, I wish they would just go away. And don't mistake me for someone who cries themselves to sleep every night either.

the daily commute

I typically ride the bus to school unless I have after school activities or something. I've done it ever since kindergarten. The big yellow buses are as familiar to me as my own two hands? Most of the time I sleep for the full hour that I'm on the bus, but today was an exception and I captured it. They are all landscape pictures, with the exception of my reflection on the door in the last one. It surprised me all the places we passed that I didn't know about (because I'm asleep), the route's changed a lot since last year and I didn't even realize...

home sweet home

Oh and just as a little side note: the area I live is going through a major drought and that's not pollution, it was cloudy today.

i'm into rainbows

The idea of them on clothing is reminiscent of younger days, kiddiness, and just emits al around cheerfulness. I have been yearning for the sneakers from Urban Outfitters for-absolutely-ever, I think this is like two years now? I should ask for them. I adore the Le Tigre puffer vest as well, I'd consider it just for kicks, it's abs crazy.
