paper bag it

I'm not sure when I actually wore this, but apparently, I took pictures. I like this simply because of the liberties I took with the different elements. The scarf is a striped tshirt worn with the neck hole over my head. The skirt actually hits past the knee, but I turned it into a paper bag type thing and used the black tie to secure (you can't really see the paper bagginess of it, but it's similar in concept to Dead Fleurette's take). The leather jacket that I wear far too often, a pair of butter yellow gloves, Hanes vneck tshirt, and some black tights, and we're done!

I enjoy retro grandma florals

'ello all. I am officially on Spring break, although there are some more homework assignments that I must get done by this weekend and turn in. (they're online assignments and tests for my physics class, isn't that insane?) The weather has turned towards full blown Spring the last couple of days and it's got me thinking about warm weather layers, prints, and especially florals. I got this retro, grandma looking dress last year in Fall at a local boutique that sells expensive denim and odd, little brands I have never heard of, and had been meaning to wear it all layered and "toughened up" like the Teen Vogue spread says, but never really got around to it. The length is incredibly awkward so I have managed to bubble the hem, but I still do not know what to do with it outfit-wise. The back is my favorite part, I love the bows and the cut-outs. Oh and you can't tell here, but there are also pockets on the skirt of the dress. And I absolutely adore digging my hands into pockets just to leave them in there, so yes it's a plus!

the work must be done in order to play

The lack of daily posts can be largely attributed to the inverse relationship between the number of days we have until the end of the quarter and the workload, as number of days decrease, workload increases. It is insane. On the other hand, please feel free to salivate as you look at the desserts I consumed yesterday at Panera. I also had the You Pick Two meal (pick two: salad, soup, sandwich), but I did not eat the turkey artichoke sandwich I ordered because I was just way too full from the half of my Hardees thickburger I had for lunch (read note: the Hardees thickburgers are so big, like the size of a ping pong paddle, maybe even a little bigger, it was sickening. I reminded everyone to stop me from ordering from there ever again and my brother ate the other half when I got home).

Ok now that I have sufficiently updated you on my daily eating habits which have gotten so incredibly unhealthy that I have to cycle 10 miles a day just to make myself feel like I am a normal human being, it is time to go do my homework before I fail all my classes.

nothing big ever came of being small

Last Friday (also Good Friday in the United States), I went to hear Clinton make a speech in support of his wife as probable presidential nominee. I shook hands with him, accidentally grabbed his suit, and took loads of pictures. It was rather interesting seeing him up close. He looked older than I expected and his white hair stood out among the sea of people, but he was eloquent as ever and there is no doubt in my mind that he is one of the world's greatest orators. I am mildly jealous of my friends who got a picture with him. He is, all things considered, a nice man. Case and point, the series of events that went down right before my friends got a picture with him.

FRIEND: (to a random person in the crowd) Hi, could you get a picture of us with Clinton when he comes around?

PERSON: If you can't see already, I am kind of busy at the moment. (he was trying to shovel himself through the masses of people)

FRIEND: (directly to Mr. Clinton himself) Mr. President, could we get a picture with you?

Bill Clinton smiles, promptly takes the camera, gives it to one of his body guards. And the body guard, obviously knowing the drill, snaps the photo.

Please note that this was not just the two of them and Clinton. All the time, Clinton was being bombarded with requests to shake hands, cameras pointed in his face taking photos, flashes going off left and right, and yet he still managed to get a photo with my friends. Even if you don't like the the man, I think you have to admit that's pretty cool...

clothes make the man. naked people have little or no influence on society

A big thank you for the birthday wishes everyone! I had a great time getting dimsum and having a low-key celebration with friends and family!

Here's a relatively recent outfit, I'm not sure if it's boring seeing me wear variations of essentially the same thing, but it's safe, easy and I don't have to put much thought into it. I'm not sure if you can see in the photographs, but my tights have white dots all over them, a recent buy from Target for $2, I think? I know, what a steal, it's no wonder that it's easy to get obsessed with legwear/tights.

earth laughs in flowers pt. 2

Yesterday I dropped by American Eagle after browsing the Flower Garden dress I mentioned in this post online. After seeing them in person, I quickly realized that these were not worth my $70, though they are rather pretty. The dress is actually two pieces. There is a simple slip as well as the sheer patterned dress; the two pieces are not attached to each other so you can wear the slip under other things. I think that now that I have seen them in person, I prefer the red version to the purple one. Overall, American Eagle has a nice selection of easy, Spring-y floral dresses so I do recommend checking them out.

PS: TODAY'S MY BIRTHDAY, I AM 18! YAYAYAYAYAYAYAYAYAYAYAYAY
PSS: I have recently created a "wishlist" type feature on the right margin of my blog so I can keep track of the things I want.

me on the piano, you on the cello?

I have already blogged about the insane number of classmates that have talents that are just beyond in another post, but I feel it needs to be reiterated and demonstrated. A good friend of mine started playing the piano about the same age I started, five or six years old, but she has progressed in technique and ability far far more than I have. She's studied in Hungary and has had private lessons with world renowned teachers/pianists from Paris. The number of competitions that she attends and places in, I can not even count and I'm pretty sure she's lost count as well. All of this, while still staying in a public school just like a normal kid (most of the people that play at her level are home schooled and completely devote their time to piano). It is just amazing. And yesterday was the first time I actually bothered to do something besides gape in awe while she played. It's a relatively short clip and we were at another friend's house so the piano was incredibly out of tune, but I doubt your average person can tell (she could, right away). Sorry for the poor video quality, the lighting was dim and my camera is anything but hi-res which is the reason for the dark dark frames. Okay, enough explaining, just watch/listen.

earth laughs in flowers

In the spirit of the start of Spring, I scoured the Interweb for potential floral additions to my closet. It was pure chance that I happened upon this little dress from American Eagle. It's named the Flower Garden Dress! To be honest, I totally did not expect something like this out of a store like American Eagle. The dress's texture is delicate and float-y and there is a three button keyhole closure on the back. The colors in the dress go together perfectly (there is a red version as well, but I prefer the purple). I think it might be time to pay American Eagle a visit!

Now I ask you for 1) your thoughts on the dress and 2) whether you expected something like this?

spring is sure to follow

Not sure how many of you were aware or maybe everyone was aware and I just realized, but today is the first day of Spring (yay for new floral-y things fashion-wise!). I have never taken much notice of the season, but whatever. This year, it seems to fall three days before my birthday. Are seasons one of those things that the date changes every year? I have never really bothered too notice... Anyway, I'm experiencing the "a closet full of nothing to wear" syndrome today. There's a house party tonight that my neighbor is throwing because his parents are out, and it's not even an event where clothing matters per se, but I would still like to look decent and it is most troubling because there seems to be too many choices, none of them appropriate, and/or no options at all, all of the above? hahaha ah, well I shall deal with it.

Oh and this weekend should be a fun one seeing as it is a long one, due to Good Friday and Easter. That means lots of sleeping in, hanging out with friends, shopping, college and museum touring, and maybe doing a little homework along the way. I probably can do a few good posts for the blog as well.

So here's an outfit from last Saturday. I am starting to have a nice plethora of outfit photos that I haven't uploaded yet and need to GIMP. It was mild weather and I really hope wearing the bow didn't make me look like a waitress, flight attendant, or some other kind of serving profession.

the only way not to think about money is to have a great deal of it

Up until now, I have relied heavily (actually entirely) on my parents to satisfy my consumption of material goods. Perhaps this is natural to a certain point, but I find myself at a crossroads where I have become quite pathetic in the sense that I do not have the independence to gain the possessions nor do I have the spoiled brattedness in me to ask for more money (I just invented a word s'ok Shakespeare did too). Therefore, my conclusion is, that at the ripe old age of eighteen years old (this Sunday, get me presents!), I will be officially searching and getting myself a job. Of course, with my experience, none, I do not expect a job that pays exceptionally well; I just want a job that can pay slightly above minimum. I have applied to some local grocers, clothes stores, etc. I'm going to apply to an ice cream store, won't that be fun? To put it plainly, I am in dire need of money. I want to buy a handbag and spend dollars at American Apparel and the Gap collabs that are coming up. Yes, so do take some pity on poor Somethingpicasso who wants everything and can afford next to nothing...

Anyway, here is a relatively recent outfit. I realized that white tights don't even have half the slimming effect/coverage that black tights do, ew. They do have these rips in the back that kind of toned down the sweetness cutsieness of the outfit a bit. However, this pair gave me hell, they would not stay up and I cut them up and threw them away as soon as a I got home, literally!

And I am just now realizing how much Target was part of this outfit, I think the Hanes tees I bought at Target too... I should really stop with the Target addiction, it's just so easy to get things there!

DIY mirrored headband

As suggested by the_kitten's (of It's A Bit Personal) comment in this post about putting studs (ahem, mirrors) on a pair of shoes, I decided to follow her advice and stick some of the larger square ones I bought onto a random headband I had laying around. And today, I wore it out! It was pretty fun being able to reflect the sun off my head and create a glare and making the glare get into people's eyes... hahah I am cruel and unusual. I got compliments on it and quite a few people asked me if it was DIY, which I hope doesn't mean it is incredibly obvious that I used a combination of Gorilla Glue and super glue to stick a few cheap mirrors on a headband and decided it was fashfash and ok enough to wear out. Take a look, and you decide.

Sunday, March 16, 2008

hello my name is thesomethingpicasso and I am addicted to tights

So I'm relatively sure that I am not alone in my addiction because the supply is one that is so incredibly plentiful that it'd be impossible not to at least have one pair and the fact that they are incredibly popular in fashfash world makes them all the more tempting. A recent inventory of a certain set of drawers in my closet has led me to believe that I have a disease, legwear in excess. Of dark tights alone, I have 13 pairs! And that is not including the four that I bought yesterday from the Vera Wang for Kohls collection (read: they were 80% off, I couldn't exactly say no and my mom egged me on too by saying, "why don't you get at least four pairs, you wear them alot..." well she said it in Chinese, but loosely translated that was the gist). Please let it be known that the colored tights collection is far less, but it is still there. And it will be growing, I can guarantee that because I made a note-to-self recently that I needed a pair of red, white, purple, and brocade pattern tights.

*note the picture on the left has only 9 pairs of tights because I was wearing a navy pair, two pairs of dark heather gray ones were MIA (in the wash, probably), and a black ripped pair was just not called for the photoshoot

Now I ask you, dear readers, because I know there are girls out there who have much deeper pockets than me and are way more into fashfash, how large is your legwear collection and are we consuming in excess?

the Old Navy haul

Last week or something, I dropped by Old Navy. It was the first time I set foot in the place for about a year. I quickly toured the "new" look and pattern stuff, nothing really perked my interest, but I did get these things from the massive sale they had going on. I highly recommend going as soon as possible. They had a lot of crisp, white shirts that I kind of regret not getting and some tailored jackets as well. The cost of the five things I copped? A little over $25, not bad, not bad at all...

PS: I am slowing realizing that I have this major attraction to hoods and hooded things (3 out of the 4 articles of clothing I purchased?). They're easy and do well in bad weather, bad hair days, bad days in general, yeaaa you catch my drift. Oh and I am still at odds as to what to do with the pink cardigan. I am so deathly scared of pink, it just looks so odd on me. Feel free to post inspiration of pink being incorporated into outfits...

scents like these

Whilst browsing the health and beauty section of Whole Foods today, I came across these perfumes that were supposed to smell exactly what the name let on. A casual whiff of the Raspberry Jam scent came off smelling exactly like the bread spread, as did the Laundry and In Between the Sheets scents; they smelled clean and like my laundry. I'll let you use your imagination on what Sex on the Beach smelled like because I didn't get a chance to waft it (perhaps it smells like the alcoholic drink?), nor was I daring enough to. At 20 dollars a pop for one ounce of the scent, they are definitely affordable compared to what's on the market today (case and point: the Missoni Missoni perfume goes for 300 dinero for half an ounce!). Now I really am considering going back and getting one or two... would you consider it?

China's basic shoe goes stateside

Equivalent in idea to the classic, all-American Converse Chuck Taylors, Keds, or even PF Flyers (the majority of which are manufactured in China), Feiyue, a brand that was founded pre-Communist era Shanghai with a meaning you can't not like "flying forward", will now be available in the US of A. The shoes are popular among people who practice martial arts, but recent collabs with designers and the relocation of company headquarters to France have gained it a nice following among fashionistas as well. Check out this picture of the shoes paired with a tulle tiered skirt on Flickr, not bad eh? As the style.com blog suggests, the lines between "style and anti-style" are getting quite blurry and it's easy to pull something unexpected, such as wearing the footwear of choice of Shaolin martial arts masters, and make it quite hip. The double V-shaped stripes and Feiyue logo are interesting enough and to top it off, they are still relatively inexpensive on Amazon.com when you do a quick search in the "Sports and Outdoors" section of the site. I'm not sure why there is such a big price discrepancy between the ones on the Feiyue site versus the ones on Amazon, but I say get them while you can for cheap!

Richard Chai is the next target

It has been confirmed. According to NY Mag, Richard Chai is slated to be Target's next Go International designer and the collection will be available in stores in early August. Exciting? I think so. It'll be around just before school/college starts so I can stock up on goods from the collection before I hit the books! Richard Chai also happens to be the first Asian designer for Go, which to some extent, makes it doubly exciting for me. He has designed for both TSE and Marc Jacobs and helped launch the Marc by Marc label when it was just coming around. A quick browse through Chai's recent collections leaves me wondering, what elements will he incorporate into his Target collection?

Oh and the pictures above are not promo/clothes pictures from the Go International collection, but merely different pictures from his two most recent collections, plus the Target logo in excess.

the shawl wrap cardigan, versatility is key

A relatively recent purchase was this gray shawl wrap cardigan. It was the last of its kind in the store and I settled for an XL size since size in this case was no issue (sleeves were a little loose, but all in all it was ok!) I quickly discovered the versatility of such a piece and the many ways it can be worn. In the photos below I wear it three ways: normal with the shawl draping down, one side thrown over the shoulder, and the third way, as a scarf. I am still experimenting with tying knots in the cardigan, but have yet to find a way that I am comfortable with. Given my daily motion from class to class sitting, standing, etc. it can be quite uncomfortable to sit on a knot or have a great protrusion coming out. Oh and lastly, the cardigan is also handy as a blanket on cold mornings waiting at the bus stop and sleeping on the bus.

even though the stars are blind

Perhaps it's because of the Chanel SS08 show that featured them, or perhaps it's my new acquisition of the Jovovich-Hawk star print vest, or perhaps even it's stemmed from a sudden bout of patriotism, but for whatever reason, I have developed a certain fondness towards stars and star-print things in everyday fashfash. They are very simple, almost like the polka dot, except with a certain space-y feel to them that makes them about 10 times as good as the oh-so-common dot. What makes them doubly great is that they have always been around, lurking. So the idea of purchasing them isn't about to break the bank or anything of the sort, they are rather affordable and the selection is bountiful. Here are some things to space out about that I found browsing the Interweb... (haha, get it? I am lame, I'm sorry!)

Oh and the reference/lyric abusage of the Paris Hilton song in the title? Not apologizing for that one, the song is mediocre, and I am not creative enough to think of another. One last little note, stars are so incredibly easy to incorporate into your wardrobe, I want the tea dress posted. Actually, that's silly, I wouldn't mind having all of it, please and thanksssss.

stud-ing out your shoes pt. 2

Perhaps the title is no longer appropriate seeing as a trip to the craft store did not yield the small, silver pyramid studs I wanted, but instead, little square mirrors. I will probably have to scour Ebay like Agathe of Style Bytes did to find the studs I desire. In the mean time, I did move forward in my little DIY, despite the setbacks. What follows is a little tutorial/description of what I did.

Materials needed:
a pair of flats
square mirrors found at Michaels
Elmer's super glue
maybe some newspaper if you're messy with the glue
silver Sharpie marker

  1. I bought an assorted pack of mirrors, thinking I might use the big ones someday. Anywaaaay, start with a clean shoe surface (wipe it off with a wet cloth or something).
  2. Place the mirrors on the way you want them, then dot the spot with the silver Sharpie. This also helps with making sure that the design on your shoes are symmetric.
  3. After doing both shoes, put a small dot of super glue on the place you made the dot. Then put the mirror gently on top, apply a little pressure, and continue onto the next dot.
  4. Repeat this until you have done all of them. I recommend doing both shoes at the same time (rather than gluing all the mirrors for one shoe, and then doing the other shoe). That way, you can see that they match-up.
  5. After it's all done, press on each mirror so that there are no air bubbles trapped underneath. Let it sit overnight just to ensure that the glue is completely dry before wearing.
  6. Voila, you've just jazzed up your shoes!
Any ideas on what I should do with the big square mirrors that came in the pack? Or the circle ones that I thought I might use for this DIY, but didn't? The circle ones are about the size of a dime.

a "what are you wearing today" post

To tell the absolute truth, I wore this a few days ago. I wanted to try my hand at print mixing with gingham and plaid. It was a lot more blah than I expected, I feel that a jacket/cardigan and some accessories might have helped, but oh well. It was only for school anyway.

consumption is the sole end and purpose of all production

I dropped by Target today to check out the three collabs that are in stores right now: Converse, Loeffler Randall, and Jovovich-Hawk.

For Converse, I was strictly browsing. The pieces my Target stocked were cute and basic (hoodies, printed tanks and tees, a few dresses, denim, etc.), but nothing really perked my interest. Oh and the shoes were pretty lame and boring. Loeffler Randall, which I browsed online beforehand, exceeded my expectations in terms of design and quality. I got the linen clutch that I wanted from the collection. The picture online does not really do it justice. It's actually a cream/gold fabric with a leather-like material flower. The flats from the collection looked ok, if not a little stiff if you actually wore them since they're made of leather-like material and have the rubber band in them.

And finally, for Jovovich-Hawk, I tried on just about everything that caught my eye and came out with one new purchase. I actually had my heart set on the star print tunic which I hear doubles as a dress, but when I asked about it they said it had been sold out for 3 or 4 days already, booo. Maybe I will order it online? Here are my picks from the collection (I got the star print vest in the last two photos, it's very well made and some little pleats at the front!)

The fabric for the dresses isn't that great, but the style and designs are really nice. I really liked the print on the apron dress, which means a lot coming from me because I don't like prints often (the majority of the T-bags prints? ewww). The crochet trim stuff I could do without but it does add a little something to the dress. It hangs very nicely and is pretty slimming since it's a voluminous dress. The dot dress and the chiffon ruffle-y dress were both really nice as well. Sizing is a little disturbed in this collection, for the dot dress I think most people could take an XS and be done with it because its a loose dress. There was also a pair of sweatshirt fabric shorts that had little ruffle detail and big buttons, those were really cute but sizes were limited so I didn't get to try them on.

Overall, a pretty successful trip at Tar-jayyyy.

PS: There was a lot of linking on this post, do you like it? Or should I skip?

stud-ing out your shoes

So studs are insanely big (in both senses of the word) this season and have been for a while. Please check out MK Olsen rocking the Givenchy supersized stud jacket. They bring that rocker tough edge and provide the ultimate contrast to overly feminine girl-y type pieces. Having said that, I feel that scouting for the perfect studded black shoe is all too time consuming, and even when you do find the perfect one, who's to say that it won't cost you an arm and leg? Therefore, in my case, a DIY is the best choice. I have an old pair of black pointy flats that I thrifted last year that I never really cozied up to, but hopefully with the help of some nice silver studs (or maybe even little circular mirrors a la Marc Jacobs!) I will be sporting them again. I believe I am going tomorrow to the craft store for glue and supplies to pretty up my grunge pair of flats tomorrow, wish me luck!

buttoning clothes takes some technique too

Taking a note from Behind Big Glasses, I tried my hand at buttoning "button-ups" in a slightly different manner. Although buttoning a plaid mens shirt flipped up/backwards doesn't really give the same ruffle-y pretty effect that buttoning a cardigan does, it does add a bit of volume and texture to the shirt. And another bonus, it shortens it quite a lot, giving it a sort of cropped look (the shirt is normally down to mid-thigh!).

my aunt is in the States

My aunt just arrived in the States (from China) Sunday night. It's so exciting to have her here, she brought some goodies from China I'll share later. She also gave us our hongbao (little red packets of money) for Chinese New Years since she wasn't here in time to give it to us earlier. Hey as the saying goes, better late than never and in this case, it is REALLY true. My aunt and the parentals are going to Florida to chill at the resort so the brother and I are going to have the house to ourselves. Can anyone say house party? No, probably not. Seeing as they're going to be gone on school days and I am too much of a freak to hold such an affair. Oh but believe me, there will be lots and lots of dining out and fast food involved. Possibly have some friends over to chill on Saturday because that really has not happened in a while. I can not even remember the last time it happened?

Oh and it is my brother's birthday this Sunday, so the family will be back in time for that. He wants a cake from the local grocer even though my mom kind of insisted that we get something from a place like Whole Foods or Fresh Market. To put it mildly, the cakes at Kroger are somewhat nauseating in the sense that there is about a 1:1 ratio of icing to actual cake. My birthday's on Easter this year (two weeks after my brother's, isn't that odd? and my parents' birthdays are three weeks apart)!

oh and I'm mildly obsessed with this dress from Urban Outfitters
maybe I'll catch it on sale because I'd never buy an item like
this full price (I don't even know if I'd wear it?) I really like interesting-
backed tops and dresses at the moment....

the best idea is always very basic and very stupid

Ensemble from a few days ago, it was close to raining, but never actually poured. How lame! I wore something with a hood just to be safe from the weather and I brought the good ole leather jacket which is has quickly climbed up the "clothes social status" ladder in my closet and is basically out and about every other day.

Thinking Blogger Award

from Poppy Lee of That's Just My Vibe, thank youuu!

I am not sure how much I actually deserve such an award, but thankyou thankyou thankyou I appreciate it so. And now, for a short Q&A session about the blog and I...

What's the story behind the name of your blog and your nickname?
To be quite honest, the name is rather random and I can barely recall the origins of such a name. I have had the same alias for quite some time (my old blog on Xanga had the same name). I guess when I say I am "the Somethingpicasso" I mean that I am in many many ways the embodiment of the type of art that Pablo Picasso constructed and created. I am incredibly abstract, vague, and undefined and oftentimes I tend to be somewhat "off" and awkward. I am definite in the sense that I know what I like and dislike, agree with and don't agree with, but even so... I can easily see the other side of my argument and I do exhibit a relatively high tolerance to views that do not coincide with my own.

Aside from all of that, I must admit that I am not very well versed in Picasso's works nor do I know a lot of the background that accompanies it. I think his cubism and blue paintings would have to be of most interest to me. Oh and I am told that there is a line in the movie Titanic that goes something along the lines of, "Who is that by...something Picasso?" but despite seeing the movie various times, I do not recall this and my name is not derived from it.

Why did you start blogging in the first place?
Simply put, it is an outlet. I rarely talk about any of the things I write about on this blog in real life. Perhaps it is because I myself still hold to belief a tiny bit that fashfash (trends, pop culture, the whole industry, etc.) is still something for those who are shallow and narrow-minded and speaking of such in RL would put a certain label on me. And said label, would probably lead to certain expectations (being able to draw/design, being able to tell someone if one thing goes with another, people recommending stuff to me...) that I am not prepared for, but I do welcome them! So yes, the blog is an outlet for my trials and tribulations, my experiments, my daily worries, fashfash.

What has been your best blogging experience? What about the worst?
I can't single out one "best blogging experience" but the best part of blogging is being able to share my thoughts and ideas (typically in visual form: photos, GIMPed pictures, etc.) and getting insane amounts of nice feedback for them, more than I would ever expect. The worst? ummmm, well there was a short time where I would get incredibly vulgar/inappropriate comments that had nothing to do with my blog, but lets let bygones be bygones. Oh and the fact that sometimes I stay up later than usual just because I'm so psyched to be blogging and consequently, get less sleep.

What do you think will happen to your blog in 2008?
It will rise to star status and I will get millions of views a day, and get featured in magazines, etc. etc. etc. Hahahha, no. I have no expectations and I don't really have any predictions as to what the future holds for this blog, but hopefully it will gravitate towards the positive rather than the negative. I expect good things in oh-eight (argh, I am a hypocrite aren't I?)

If you have read this far I seriously applaud you and you deserve a pat on the back or something else in its equivalence. Because when I said "short Q&A" I actually meant long winded and ramble-y. Oh and the lack of actual posts is due to my laziness, sorry! Oh and the fact that I had some tidying up to do (mainly my hanging closet, but my drawers a bit too) so I am going to use that as an excuse as well... ta-ta for now!
