I watched Oprah yesterday. She went to Denmark to visit the so-called "happiest people on earth", and she made me realize how obsessed Americans are with consumerism and material possessions. I can't tell if its a good or bad thing that we measure our worth by what we own.
Details: #1 Rodarte x Target striped tee. 2 Ralph Lauren shawl-collar sweater with gold toggle. 3, 4 Gap shimmer top. I'm amassing a tidy little collection of long-sleeved striped tops, and it is very pleasing to me. You can really do no wrong with stripes, right?
nice picks! Being Canadian with American relatives, I'm always upset by the rampant consumerism of the states when I see it first hand. I think its a sad, and very very bad thing to measure self worth by the amount of stuff you own - I don't think those two things have anything to do with each other. Maybe the economic downturn has made people start to realize this...
ReplyDeleteI WATCHED THAT EPISODE TOO! like a long time ago though. but ya, they DO seem happy especially with all the simple things in life. and free public healthcare and education? can't other places in the world see how happy they can be if they just adjusted THEIR healthcare and education systems? so sad.
ReplyDeleteanyway, i loooove that RL sweater with the gold toggle!! it adds a very nice touch to the good ol striped top
The shimmery Gap top is gorgeous!! Oh and America needs to get a clue on a lot of things, I can't wait to get the hell out of here =/

I've also being amassing a ridiculous amount of long-sleeved monochrome stripes... there's something so amazingly chic and easy about them. Love the collar on the Ralph Lauren top! And the Rodarte X Target... if only I lived in the US! xx
ReplyDeleteAhhh, I need that Gap top! It's gorgeous and I love the pleating on the front.
ReplyDeleteyep, i totally agree. we are a culture that runs on our obsessive materialistic pursuit of.. fleeting moments of happiness..
ReplyDeleteanyways. i'm a victim of that too though. i loveee your buys. that rodarte striped shirt is priceless
I really want to see that episode. there's a stylelikeu video that i recently posted (its on the home page of my blog right now) and in it, sophie, from nyc i would imagine, compares nyc shoppers to Parisian shoppers (where shes currently residing i would guess) and she draws a similar parallel, stating that american just buy and splurge cause they dont know any different whereas, Parisians will inspect every detail of the garment and how it can be worn and how worthwhile of a purchase itll be before deeming it a worthy purchase. i really like that mentality. i also find fashion blogging makes you spend more thatn you would if you perhaps werent a fashion blogger. im kinda broke atm and trying to reverse those habits. i live in Canada so im not really sure how i compare on the overall to an american girl my age, but one thing's for sure, i know my wishlist isnt getting any shorter! :)
